Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints (often referred to as LDS or Mormons) have been counseled for years to have a year's supply of food. Regardless of your own religious affiliation or lack thereof, the LDS Church's Provident Living website offers a treasure trove of useful information for "preppers" or anyone else interested in home canning, food storage and emergency preparedness.
Self-Reliance and Family Well Being
Navigating to the Self-Reliance and Family Well Being section of Provident Living will link you to resources for Home Storage, Emergency Preparedness, Gardening and other useful topics. The Home Storage section is especially helpful with information on short and long term food storage, drinking water and water purification, information on building a financial reserve, and even product and packaging recommendations. The Emergency Preparedness section has information on creating a family preparedness plan with links to addtional resources. The Gardening section also has some helpful tips with links to additional information.
Other Resources Offered
In addition to emergency preparedness home storage resources, Provident Living also provides information on Employment, Finances, Physical Health, Social and Emotional Strength, Combating Pornography, and Education. The employment resources are especially impressive. Most non-Mormons are unaware of LDS Employment Services which offers free help to job seekers (regardless of religious affiliation) including job listings, resume assistance, and career counseling. You can link directly to LDSjobs.org from Provident Living to look at job listings or contact LDS Employment services in your area. Additionally, the resources on finances are also very helpful.
Provident Living is a jumping off point
While the general information found on Provident Living is very useful, the site is really a jumping off point. You will find links to additional pages and documents that will go into more detail on each topic. The LDS church has been encouraging its members to store food and water for decades and has published several pamphlets and articles over the years. Many of these are referenced and linked to from Provident Living.
What if I'm not a Mormon?
Obviously, Provident Living is a website created by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, so there are links to writings by church leaders, and occasional scripture references. But for the most part, information is presented in a very straightforward, non-preachy way. If you want more information on the church and its teachings it is readily available, but if not, you can glean plenty of helpful "secular" information. Surprisingly, whether its the church's food storage, employment or Family History resources, a high percentage of users are not members of the LDS church.
Provident Living Summary
With more and more people getting interested in emergency preparedness and home food storage there has been an explosion of web resources geared to this growing audience. The Provident Living website is a well presented and helpful repository of information from an organization that has been providing insight on the topic for decades.
